I don’t know about you, but roofs aren’t something I think a whole lot about. In fact, I probably think about breast reduction more, and I don’t even have any breasts to reduce! (If anything i guess I would want bigger ones…Which seems odd, seeing as I am male). Unless I happen to be speaking to a roofing expert then, generally speaking, I barely give them a passing thought. Which is funny, because I did happen to be speaking to a roofing expert last night on the phone. He’s my friend, and we got talking about his business, which involves him seeing roofs more than he sees his wife and kids.

Up until then I hadn’t really considered how big the problem of tarmac roofing (I don’t know the exact name but it looks just like tarmac) is. But it is a problem, and it is everywhere. It’s full of chemicals and the whole process is as about as harmful to the environment as it gets.

There are solutions, of course, and this was what interested me. My friend, you see, runs a conservation roofing company which specializes in making people’s roofs like gardens. They lay soil on them and then turf, and in a matter of weeks the thing is rich in plant life and a thriving eco-system. He emailed me some photos of his past projects this morning and I have to say they look amazing. I’d definitely recommend it for anyone who’s thinking of having their roof re-done in a more eco-friendly way.
