Assassins Creed II
It seems that these days far more effort goes into the look of a game and all the, admittedly impressive, aesthetic aspects of a game. Less and less emphasis seems to go on actual game-play and storylines and Assassins Creed II is the perfect example of this.
The game looks fantastic, I don’t think anyone can argue there and the fluidity of the character’s movements along with the animations within the game are all amazing. I give the art department that worked on this, along with the animators, ten out of ten for presentation. However, before I offer too much praise, the rest of the game is lacking.
Gone are the days of the Metal Gear Solids, the Final Fantasys and the Soul Reavers it seems. These were games that perfected storylines. The plots from each of these games could have easily come from novels or been translated into movies. Assassins Creed II is an attempt at a clichéd storyline driven by revenge. There are plot-holes all over the place and stagnant, one dimensional characters, including the shamefully dull Ezio, who is the main character.
The game-play, although better than Assassins Creed, still has a long way to go to become great. The game is full of side-quests that are repetitive and boring and full of people who seem just as good as Ezio (a trained assassin) at running across rooftops and leaping across impossible gaps. The combat is the same as the first game but now there are more weapons which is a nice addition. However, there just isn’t enough variety in the game’s missions. You go forward, kill a group of guys that never really challenge you, then chase someone then go somewhere else and do the same. His inventory also seems almost limitless, as if he is some sort of self storage Jedi. What happened to the days when you had to manage your items?!
I’m hopeful that a series with as much potential as this, is one day translated into a great game, but this will only happen if the emphasis moves past appearances.
