Travel trauma

When did going on holiday become so complicated? When I was a carefree teenager, all I needed was a passport, a few quids worth of the local currency in my back pocket and a bottle of hand wash detergent and I’d be happy to disappear for months at a time. Now, we have to worry about all the different chargers for our array of laptops, iPads, mobiles, Blackberries, music players and games consoles. Then we have to make sure all those precious items are safely packed, in branded carrying cases obviously, and that our once unnecessary travel insurance premiums are bang up to date, and ample enough to cover the small electronics store that we are taking away with us. What happened to just chilling out and taking a good book?
Well, I decided I was going to cut the trauma on my last holiday and only take away those items that would improve the quality of my holiday; my mobile phone, for keeping in touch with the folks back home, and my MP3 player, as what’s a holiday without music? I even found a way to use the same charger for both, so that cut down on the packing and once I’d bagged a great deal on the internet which promised to lessen your worldwide roaming prices, then I was set.
The first couple of days were hard. I kept reaching for a laptop that wasn’t there and the flight was pretty dull without my hand held games console to keep me amused. But I soon remembered the joy of gazing out of an aeroplane window on a sunny day and, believe it or not, the movie we got shown in cattle class was not that bad. By the end of the week, I was sure I could manage full time without all my gadgets.
Bet you can’t guess what I did first when I got in the house and back to civilisation? Fell straight off the wagon and jumped back online, of course…
